We are looking for a dedicated and compassionate SEND Sixth Form Teacher to join our team and lead a small class of SEND students through an essential life skills and functional skills curriculum. This role is perfect for an educator passionate about preparing students with SEND for adulthood, helping them build independence, confidence, and practical skills to support their future endeavours.
About the Role: As our SEND Sixth Form Teacher, you will work with a small, focused group of young adults with varying SEND needs, including ASD, ADHD, and other learning challenges. This role focuses on teaching practical life skills and functional skills, designed to equip students with the tools they need to navigate real-world situations successfully. You’ll deliver a curriculum that balances academic learning with essential life skills, fostering a supportive, structured environment where students feel valued and empowered.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design and implement lessons focusing on functional skills (English, Maths, ICT) and essential life skills, including budgeting, self-care, social skills, and employability.
- Break down complex concepts into accessible, practical steps, tailored to each learner’s developmental level and personal goals.
- Create a safe, inclusive classroom environment that encourages self-expression, independence, and emotional well-being.
- Conduct regular assessments and adapt learning plans to track and support each student’s progress in line with their Education, Health, and Care Plan (EHCP).
- Use hands-on, real-life learning opportunities (e.g., role-playing, community outings) to enhance students’ understanding and application of skills.
- Collaborate with teaching assistants, SENCO, and external specialists to deliver coordinated and holistic support for each student.
- Engage regularly with parents, caregivers, and external agencies to provide updates on student progress, share strategies, and discuss future goals.
Ideal Candidate:
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent, with experience in post-16 or SEND education, particularly in life skills or functional skills teaching.
- Strong understanding of SEND education, including strategies for teaching life and functional skills to young adults with diverse learning needs.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with students, families, and multidisciplinary teams.
- Patient, adaptable, and creative, with a strong commitment to empowering SEND learners to develop their independence and practical skills.
- Organised and proactive in preparing lessons that are relevant, hands-on, and directly applicable to real-life scenarios.
What We Offer:
- A supportive, collaborative environment with a commitment to professional development and SEND-specific training.
- Small class sizes allow for individualised instruction and meaningful connections with each student.
- The rewarding experience of making a direct impact on students’ lives, helping them build essential skills for their future.
- Opportunities to shape a curriculum focused on practical, real-world applications for SEND students transitioning to adulthood.
If you are a committed teacher with a passion for SEND education and a desire to make a difference in students’ lives by fostering independence and life-readiness, we would love to hear from you. Please apply with your CV for this rewarding role.
