The Role
We are seeking a passionate and experienced Head of English to lead our English Department. As Head of English, you will drive high standards in teaching and learning, ensuring that all students, regardless of their individual needs, can engage with and enjoy the English curriculum. Your role will involve working closely with teachers, support staff, and senior leadership to tailor the English curriculum to meet the needs of SEND students, including creating and implementing strategies that support literacy, communication, and language development across the school.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and manage the English Department, including curriculum development and delivery, ensuring high-quality, inclusive, and differentiated teaching.
- Develop and implement literacy strategies and language interventions tailored to meet the diverse needs of SEND students.
- Support and mentor English teachers and teaching assistants, offering professional development opportunities.
- Collaborate with the SENCO and other department heads to create cross-curricular links and support whole-school initiatives.
- Monitor student progress, conducting regular assessments and evaluations to ensure students achieve their individual targets.
- Engage with parents, carers, and external agencies to support student learning and well-being.
- Ensure that the English curriculum aligns with school policies, SEND best practices, and any relevant statutory requirements.
Essential Requirements
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a degree in English or a related subject.
- Proven experience in teaching English, with a strong track record of improving student outcomes, ideally within an SEND setting.
- Excellent understanding of SEND best practices, including strategies for supporting students with communication, language, and literacy needs.
- Experience in a leadership or middle management role, with the ability to inspire and motivate a team.
- Strong knowledge of the national curriculum, with the ability to adapt and innovate to meet SEND student needs.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with a collaborative approach to working with colleagues, families, and external agencies.

- Experience with communication aids, alternative assessments, and therapeutic approaches to learning.
