SSG Stories: Creating a Safe Space in Wigan

In Wigan, a young learner with SEMH complications faced a challenging journey. After struggling to find the right support to provide the care and connection they needed, they were awaiting moving from mainstream school to a SEND school.

The young learner felt unsafe due to trauma and spent most of the day with the Head Teacher, who then got in touch with the Specialist SEND Group, where we were able to pair the learner well with a Teaching assistant who had a similar pool of interests which the young learner connected with and turn into a role model for them, this improved their attendance and integrated them back onto the classroom as they began to feel safe before navigating over to a different school.

This story is a testament to the power of connection and care. It shows how SSG match our candidates to the needs of the young person Teaching Assistants who create an environment where they can grow, thrive, and believe in themselves. We’re incredibly proud of the difference our Teaching Assistants make every day.
